Is a Circle really needed?

In Wicca, it is suggested that a Circle is needed to perform magick. It is formed to retain the power during the energy raising, since it is hard for one's body to retain this power (especially while dancing, etc). The Circle does the job of retaining it.

What are your opinions or ideas? Do you always use a Circle when doing magick? If so, why do you feel that it is needed or not needed?

Hello fire and Merry meet again

I feel that at the start of learning new rites and spellcrafting that a circle helps give comfort to the crafter. However, I do not think it is always necessary to have a circle casting when doing certain types of magic. But then again, I have done circle for a much needed prayer before for the comfort and helpful energy push when releasing the circle. BB, angel

First of, let it be known that I am not Wiccan. I probably shouldn't even be posting this...

Secondly, I am one who believes in the power of the mind. If you believe that it is best to cast a circle because some book tells you so, thus you believe it, or experience tells you so, thus you believe it, then by all means: cast the circle.

I don't work with magic, per say, so I don't feel a need to cast a circle. If I did decide to do something with magic, I probably wouldn't cast a circle, for various reason.

So that's what I think

Like a lot of us, i share my life with a young and enegetic family. my rooms are filled with the collective possetions of its members..now yes i do use a circle..if only to clear a space..both phycically...ever tried creating a spell whilest sitting on a six inch model of big bird?.....and mentaly...kids can fill a room even when their not in it...also it helps to focus my attention..it says..to me anyway...notice this, this is something special...besides, sometimes it is nice to be a little ritualistic...to put on a bit of a show, it strengthens the experiance.

i do not feel it is essential, but like a lot of things who wants to do with the bear nessesitys

To each their own really, I guess. I mean, we all constantly move in a circle of our own making...if you believe in auras, that is. I guess, one could always 'charge' their aura and constantly move about in a sacred circle, thus one would not necessarily need to cast one when they are about to do magick.

Ok, so I'm rambling. So what!

Ok you are not rambling Rev - honest - and you do have a good point as well as everyone else - so I thank you all for the posts.

As I am a Wiccan, I believe that a Circle is a part of the Magickal hapenings  -- though I do not always use a Circle - for many reasons, but mainly, I am usually alone and there is usually no noise around me.

Thank you all again for the posts and the thoughts.

Ok my turn it appears that everyone seems to looking at this question from a singular point of view of a solitary nature, now if we exspand it out to include a group, then I could see a need to charge a circle one to attune all involved to the ritual at hand, and two  to "incircle" all of the many personal circles within. A circle in a group setting is multi pupose indeed, it brings unity, mass protection, and a limited space for all to work in a organised manner. So as you can see there are many different reasons to have a circle when many practictioners are involved. However on a singular level a circle is a independent call by the individual practictioner.
