Starhawk on Terrorism....kinda.

Pagans Reject the Idea of Evil--
How Do We Respond to Terrorism?

Ok, I went into this article with a pretty open mind...I mean, she is a well-known writer and all, but I quickly began to disagree with what she had to say and that it seems that she's trying to speak for ALL Pagans.

Evil is a construct Pagans try to avoid.

Now, I don't know about you, but I acknowledge evil as being very real, and so do many, many other Pagans I know. I mean, you ask them what they think of someone that is, say, a child molester, and many of them will tell you that the person is evil. So for her to say that "Pagans reject the idea of evil", I feel, is very inaccurate.

Granted, I would love to see a world without war, but the sad fact is that people have egos....and as long as we have such, there is going to be someone somewhere whose ego gets in the way and starts some major bruhaha. While we can try to stop it, I think it will remain a part of our race for a very long time to come.

I agree with you, too many times, those few pagans in the spotlight seem to think that the rest of us have signed on to be represented by them. I, for one, like to consider my self a unique and independent enough of a person to have my own say in dealings.

Starhawk is famous for making many assumptions about pagans overall and has galringly made two in this article. The first, you brought up; the second is  in the line:

"As Pagans, we are each our own spiritual authority, each with our own connection to the Goddess."
I think that Asatru groups, just for starters, would skin her alive for trying to represent them in this fashion. Many pagan groups are based on a connection of the Lord and Lady in equal terms, in fact, many sects of wicca are like this. I also think that spiritual authority comes from within, so everyone is there own spiritual authority. A person chooses their spiritual path, whether it is asatru, wiccan, christian, hindu, shinto or jedi! True, some religions have figure heads trying to get in the way between the believer and their source, but thats a topic for another post

Yeah, someone on Witchvox actually was defending her saying that she was only speaking for herself or her reclaiming tradition. Um, sorry, but statements like:

But if we reject the concept of evil, how do we respond to horrific acts? Is there a specifically Pagan response to such violence? There is no central Pagan authority, no Pagan Pope to issue bulls, no Pagan rabbinical authority to say who does or does not have the right to interpret for us. We have no sacred scriptures to interpret, anyway. As Pagans, we are each our own spiritual authority, each with our own connection to the Goddess.

I mean, if she were talking about herself, it would be "me, myself, and I", and if she were talking about her own tradition, she would have said that in the beginning. No, she is trying to speak for us all, and that is just a bit conceited, I'm sorry.

I also have a problem with the whole only mentioning the Goddess issue. Yeah, you have Dianic Wiccans that mainly focus just on the Goddess. Then you have others that view the God and Goddess as equal. THEN...you have others...like Dave and I...that see a Universal Source that is neither male nor female, but basically the sum of all things. In the "Pagans honor a Crone" article I posted, they made a statement that Christians worship one God, and Pagans many. I also wrote that author and told her that some Pagans are monotheistic. She wrote me back, told me her editor had thrown that line in there, and thanked me for the info, and she would send it on to her editor.
