The Seven-Pointed Heptagram

A Little research about the Seven-pointed star that Jjackyll asked about in  the CPEF chat.

Please feel free to post to this thread any further information you run across.

Jjackyll was wondering about the Heptagram and had been told it was Magickal/Ceremonial.

This section is from Solitary Witch by Silver RavenWolf in the 3rd Section of the book in the Astrology section and the section its self is entitled “The Heptagram and the Magickal Days, and begins on page 184.

Although the heptagram (a seven-pointed star, above) is often used by the Faery traditions to represent their spirituality, if appears that its original basis had much to do with astrology, timing and the advent of the seven-day week [will also post on this I found] used throughout the Hellenistic world of mixed cultures (Egyptian/Greco-Roman).  For some, the design represents the magick in the number seven, and various cultural deities, including the Seven Faces of Hathor (Egyptian), the Seven Pillars of Wisdom (Middle East), and the Seven Mothers of the World (Southeast Asia) [18].  In general magick you can place this symbol on any object as a defense against penetration – for example, private papers (your diary or magickal Journal).  If [a person] is a police officer or construction worker, where they face danger every day, … write his or her name in the center of the star and empower the drawing as a protective device.  … Put the paper in a pocket or wallet, or something worn close to the body.

You will also find the heptagram in several old grimoires, where it is associated with the speed of the planets moving through the heavens, and matches the energies of the planets to the seven days of the week.

The diagram [immediately] above, can be read two ways and gives us two interpretations.  First, if we begin with the moon and move counter-clockwise, we see that the planets are listed from the fastest-moving body in the heavens to the slowest of the known planets in classical times, which are as follows: the moon, Mercury, Venus, sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.  If we put our finger on the moon, then trace to Mars, to Mercury, to Jupiter, to Venus, to Saturn and then to the sun, we have just traced the planetary energies of our calendar week:

Monday: Moon

Tuesday: Mars

Wednesday: Mercury

Thursday: Jupiter

Friday: Venus

Saturday: Saturn

Sunday: Sun

…and this continuous line moves clockwise around the diagram.  In some magickal traditions, the heptagram begins with the sun placed at the highest point.

…If we want to remember which planet moves faster, then we start with the moon and move counterclockwise to Mercury, to Venus, to the sun, and so on.  If we want to know what rules which day of the week, we start with the sun (Sunday), trace to the moon (Monday), to Mars (Tuesday), to Mercury (Wednesday), to Jupiter (Thursday), to Venus (Friday), and then to Saturn (Saturday).  As with the first diagram, these are the seven classical planets of the ancient world.

To modern magicians, the heptagram stands for the distribution of the planetary energies through the seven days of the week, and is associated with the seven colors of the rainbow, the Egyptian Goddess Isis, and is sometimes called the Symbol of Venus or Star of Venus because Venus is both the rising and setting star {here she suggests a section of the book SEE PENTAGRAM).  At certain times of the year she rises at dawn, and other times of the year she rises at twilight – therefore some called her the Gateway to the Stars.  The heptagram is also used for calculating planetary hours, a fine-tuning device used in magick and ritual.

[This doesn't appear to have the 2 pictures of the heptagram.  I will get with Rev Dave and see if he can explain to me how to do insert pictures - Astarte.]

This is from this link:

The weekday heptagram. In ancient times the seven-day week was not used. In the Pharaonic empire that existed along the shores of the Nile about 4,500 years ago a ten-day week was used. That ten-day week was prevalent in both Egypt and Greece, and even in Asia Minor and the Euphrates-Tigris region, until after the death of Jesus. A remnant of this method of dividing time is found in the astrological decanates, a division of the zodiac signs into three parts of ten degrees or days, each with a certain planet as ruler.

At the beginning of the first millennium B.C. in Assyria a five-day week was used. In ancient Israel, however, they used a seven-day week, but it is not known just how long they used this method of dividing time. It was with the adoption and widespread use of the seven-day week throughout the Hellenistic world of mixed cultures that this heptagram was created. If we arrange the planets known at that time in order of the length of their orbital times (with the sun's orbital time on behalf of the geocentric perspective of astrology taking the place of the earth's) the result is the following: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. If we place them in this order at each point of the heptagram, and then take a pen and follow the lines as if we were drawing a heptagram in one line without lifting the pen from the paper, we discover the planets that correspond to each of the seven weekdays in due order: , Sunday (dimanche, domingo); , Monday (lundi, lunes); , Tuesday, Tyr's day (in Latin countries Mars'day, mardi, martes); , Wednesday (Woden's or Odin's day in the Nordic countries Mercury's day, mercredi, miercoles, in Latin countries); , Thursday (Tor's day in Nordic countries Jupiter's day, jovedi, jueves, in Latin countries); , Friday (the day of the goddess Freja in the Nordic countries Venus' day, vendredi, viernes, in Latin countries); , Saturday, Saturn's day (lördag lögare dag, bathing and washing day, in the Nordic countries samedi, sabado, in Latin countries).

I think that is enough atm on the uses of the heptagram and its relations other than only Enochian etc.  The Planatary Hours are thought to be useful for giving spellwork and extra boost when begun in the cooresponding hour as related to the Hour's ruling Planet.  Hope you find the little bit of extra information helpful Jjackel.

Blessed Be, Astarte

Good job mom! i'm always impressed at the extent of your knowledge. Keep it up and let us know more about the wiccan belief. i'm sure you could do a wonderful rendention of the 3-fold law for those that may be unfamilar with it or would just like to revisit the topic.

MM Kridiana,

Oh boy, you really want me to open a cna of worms?  I am told there are those that don't "believe" in "thee 3-fold law"...

kk, will start getting my ducks in a row:)

but for openers (and this is kinda how I tend to look at it, call it 3-fold law or what you want)... From the Proem in The Secret Doctrine by Helena P Blavatsky this is one of the 3 Fundamental proposistions put forth (and also supposed to be the most important of the three propositions):

"The fundamental identity of all Souls with the Universal Over-Soul, the latter being itself an aspect of the Unknown Root; and the obligatory pilgrimage for every Soul -- a spark of the former -- through the Cycle of Incarnation (or "Necessity") in accordance with Cyclic and Karmic law, during the whole term. In other words, no purely spiritual Buddhi (divine Soul) can have an independent (conscious) existence before the spark which issued from the pure Essence of the Universal Sixth principle, -- or the OVER-SOUL, -- has (a) passed through every elemental form of the phenomenal world of that Manvantara, and (b) acquired individuality, first by natural impulse, and then by self-induced and self-devised efforts (checked by its Karma), thus ascending through all the degrees of intelligence, from the lowest to the highest Manas, from mineral and plant, up to the holiest archangel (Dhyani-Buddha). The pivotal doctrine of the Esoteric philosophy admits no privileges or special gifts in man, save those won by his own Ego through personal effort and merit throughout a long series of metempsychoses and reincarnations. This is why the Hindus say that the Universe is Brahma and Brahmâ, for Brahma is in every atom of the universe, the six principles in Nature being all the outcome -- the variously differentiated aspects -- of the SEVENTH and ONE, the only reality in the Universe whether Cosmical or micro-cosmical; and also why the permutations (psychic, spiritual and physical), on the plane of manifestation and form, of the sixth (Brahmâ the vehicle of Brahma) are viewed by metaphysical "

the part to notice here is : "Brahma is in every atom of the universe" hence ALL are divine, including our fellow humans

That is the begining of my Karms expose, I will start a separt thread about "the three fold law" and Karma prhaps tomarrow.

Blessed Be,

Astarte

Ok, there is a possibility that Astarte has already covered this - she really is a very knowledgable individual thus I bow to her!

For whatever it is worth - this is what I have learned of the Heptagram.

Heptagrams comprise seven-pointed star shapes. Often regularly symmetrical in shape, they can have a construction with 14 intersecting lines. It has various uses in the many paths of magick, used for a variety of things.

A solid (filled) form of heptagram appears often on the the US flag as well as found in the heraldic symbolism of Australia. In the Australian context, the seven points allegedly represent the six states of Australia (one each) plus an extra one to represent the combined territories. This is a wonderful site to learn more;  "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptagram"
